Nanaimo’s John Barsby Secondary now has ‘cluster’ of COVID-19 cases, too

Additional COVID-19 exposure reported for Nov. 9-10

Nanaimo Ladysmith school district is now reporting a cluster of COVID-19 cases at another high school.

An additional COVID-19 case has been confirmed at John Barsby Secondary School, so Island Health is classifying the two cases at that high school as a cluster. A cluster of cases at Dover Bay Secondary was reported earlier this week.

Island Health’s website defines a cluster as “two or more individuals with lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection who attended school during their infectious period” and adds that “the cases may be linked to school-based transmission.”

The new case at Barsby involved an individual who was at the school Nov. 9-10. The school district noted in a social media post that the individual is at home isolating and Island Health has completed contact tracing.

“For everyone’s safety, Island Health suggests to: perform daily health checks, stay home if sick, wear a mask when outside your cohort or family bubble, limit activity and social events, stay close to home,” noted the school district, while thanking the school community for its co-operation.
