Nanoose Bay farm inks deal with food bank

If residents want to have a local supply of food then they have to support local farms in a major way, says owner

Nanoose Edibles Organic Farm in Nanoose has secured a deal to sell $30,000 worth of produce to Nanaimo’s Loaves & Fishes food bank.

“This order particularly gives the farm some stability through the production season,” said Barbara Ebell, one of the owners of Nanoose Edibles. Ebell said she and her husband have been training a young crew to take over the farm for the past couple of years and this is a great opportunity for them to expand their market.

She said if residents want to have a local supply of food then they have to support local farms in a major way, and she credits Loaves & Fishes for taking a leadership role in that regard.

Although this deal doesn’t necessarily mean more jobs at the farm, Nanoose Edibles is currently looking for young farmers and those looking to take a soil apprenticeship program, part-time workers and volunteers who want to learn about organic farming.
