Nanoose Bay peninsula downgraded to Stage 3 after pump station problem

Pump station was fixed Aug. 11

The water restrictions in the Nanoose Bay peninsula have been downgraded back to Stage 3 following a fix to a pump that had failed earlier.

The Regional District of Nanaimo had implemented a Stage 4 watering restriction while the pump was being fixed. The pump was fixed Saturday, Aug. 11 and the water restrictions moved back to Stage 3 with the rest of the RDN.

The ban took effect immediately and was activated after a pump failed at the Craig Bay pump station, which reduced the available water supplied from the Englishman River in Parksville to the Nanoose Bay Peninsula Water Service Area, according to an RDN advisory issued today, Aug. 8.

The higher level watering restriction will ensure adequate water is available for fire protection until repairs are made and reservoir levels have recovered.

A Stage 4 watering restriction places a ban on all outdoor water use including watering lawns, washing vehicles, filling pools, and outdoor washing and power washing. Lawn watering permits are also not valid during the heightened restrictions.

Watering gardens by hand is still allowed between 7-10 a.m. and 7-10 p.m. and vegetable gardens are exempt from all watering restrictions.

Repairs are expected to be completed by the weekend.
