Nass Valley village celebrates National Aboriginal Day today

The theme in Gitlaxtaamiks is rock and roll

  • Jun. 16, 2017 2:00 p.m.

WHO better than Elvis to help celebrate National Aboriginal Day in Gitlaxt’aamiks (New Aiyansh) in the Nass Valley today?

And that fits in with the rock and roll theme organizers are putting on with a series of events beginning this morning and ending in late afternoon.

Although National Aboriginal Day is June 21, the day is being celebrated early in the Nass Valley.

The day begins officially at 11 a.m. with a parade followed by a children’s bike parade and prizes.

Those with an appetite will appreciate the food booths.

All day events include a tiki climbing wall, human hamster ball, a large bouncy castle and various slides to keep children active and engaged.

For those with a competitive interest, there’s a dunk tank, sumo wrestling and bull riding.

The popular moccasin mile returns as does the competition to produce the best moose call.

There’s also arm wrestling and a tug of war.

As in past years, proceeds go toward the Gitlaxt’aamiks Elders.
