After winning the largest official opposition in three decades, the federal NDP have been busy getting ready to take on their new role within the House.
Layton was handing out positions in his shadow cabinet to oversee the government caucus, but Skeena-Bulkley MP Nathan Cullen will not be in it.
He will, however, be chairing the Ethics Committee, a standing committee within Parliament which keeps an eye on the ethics of government.
“This is the place the ethics of the country get dealt with when ethics go wrong,” said Cullen. “Which, unfortunately, under majority governments seems at an increasing rate.”
Far from being disappointed on not getting a shadow cabinet post, Cullen was excited for his work as the committee chair.
“I’m thrilled with the role,” he said. “I think it suits me well.”
Cullen said the diplomacy and the need to keep the government to account play to his personal strengths.
“Chairing this particular committee is one that is recognized as a place of some influence,” he said.
Cullen said his position will still ensure he can be a strong voice for the northwest and his constituents.
