NBA star’s story brought to life in Langley’s Army & Navy parking lot

The Real MVP TV movie starring Cassandra Freeman as Wanda Pratt – mother of the NBA star Kevin Durant – was filming in Langley this week.

The words “cut” could be heard echoing off the Army & Navy store in downtown Langley City this week, as film crews worked to beat the sunset and capture a clip for an upcoming TV movie being produced Queen Latifah.

A small section of the mall parking lot, just south of Douglas Crescent and east of 203rd Street, was blocked to traffic Thursday as film crews attempted to catch a scene with a car being frantically driven up to the entrance of the store, then a man in work gear jumping out of the driver’s side to help escort someone into the passenger’s side of the same car.

It wasn’t earth shattering cinematic action, but it did attract the attention of a few onlookers throughout the afternoon.

It was a scene for an upcoming made-for-TV movie telling the story of Wanda Pratt, the mother of NBA star Kevin Durant.

While some might not know Durant’s prowess on the court, some might have learned about him when he made a speech in 2014 – when being crowned the year’s most valuable player (MVP).

When accepting his trophy, he said the real MVP was his mother, who – as a single mother – had sacrificed so much to raise himself and his brother Tony. He said he wouldn’t have had his basketball career and triumphs without his mother.

The movie stars Cassandra Freeman (Somewhere in the Middle, Inside Man, and Single Ladies) as Durant’s mother, Wanda Pratt, with relative newbie Daniel Bellomy playing Kevin.

The show will apparently air on Lifetime around Mother’s Day.
