Demands are growing to improve pedestrian safety in a Vernon neighbourhood.
Coun. Catherine Lord has joined residents in expressing concern about the lack of lights along the trail behind the sewer treatment plant on 25th Avenue.
“It’s really a shortcut to the shopping area on 25th Avenue,” said Lord, adding that she has walked the trail recently and it is very dark at this time of the year without lights.
“There would be a real benefit to people in the area to be able to walk it at night.”
A 50-name petition was presented to the city in August demanding improvements to the path.
“Many people use this path and I have stated repeatedly that this area has paid residential taxes for more than 40 years,” said resident Patrick Heglund in a letter to council.
Heglund is frustrated with a city policy that states lighting is installed on pedestrian corridors only where conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles may occur.
“With more than 4,000 hours of darkness during the year, I would politely twist your ear regarding this minor improvement,” he wrote to council in his letter.
