Mayor John Dooley opened Monday night’s council meeting with the news that the city’s cenotaph had been vandalized.
He said the action offends the sacrifices of people who died in both world wars.
“I just want to say that if you know anyone who was involved in that, be brave enough to come forward and show some of the bravery of the folks who gave us the freedom to sit at this meeting tonight,” he said.
Someone tore metal plaques from the structure and broke some of the lights, leaving debris strewn on the ground.
The Nelson Police Department told the Star they are investigating and have no suspects.
