At its July 13 council meeting, the City of Nelson granted $95,667 to non-profits who could demonstrate lost revenue because of the pandemic.
The program was announced at the council meeting on May 25.
The city allotted $300,000 for these grants, with a maximum grant of $15,000 per organization, to be taken from the $2,613,000 the city received in November from the federal-provincial Safe Restart Agreement designed to support facility re-openings and local emergency response in the pandemic.
Council awarded one-time grants to the following organizations:
• Glacier Gymnastics, $15,000
• Nelson Civic Theatre Society, $15,000
• Nelson Curling Club, $15,000
• Nelson Soccer Association, $15,000
• Nelson Baseball, $6,800
• Nelson Road Kings, $3,953
• Selkirk Concert Society, $5,400
• SPCA, $4,514
Nine other organizations’ applications totaling $100,350 were rejected for various reasons including, in several cases, operating surpluses for 2021.
Eligibility criteria for the grants were:
• Nelson-based
• Registered non-profit or sponsored by one
• Demonstrated loss of revenue as a result of the pandemic
• Applied to other emergency funding sources where eligible
• Governed by a volunteer board of directors
• Demonstrate an inclusive and diverse approach to their operations and activities
Ineligible were publicly funded or private educational institutions; organizations who failed reporting requirements in previous grants from the city; and unincorporated committees, groups or collectives.
Council discussed, but did not decide, whether the surplus of more than $200,000 could be used in the near future for another round of applications related to pandemic recovery, with the same or revised purpose and criteria.
