What’s the plan for Baker Street?

For the past year the City of Nelson has been working on the fourth phase of its urban design strategy, and they plan to post their draft online and present it at an upcoming open house on April 20.

“The strategy is a master plan for the public realm that provides a comprehensive vision for the downtown core, as well as a visual toolkit of the various streetscape elements,” reads a city press release.

The plan will include, among other things, new signs, street furniture, lamps and landscaping. It will be posted at nelsonurbandesign.com today.

Copies of the draft strategy can also be viewed at the Nelson Public Library and in the development services department. During the open house, which will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Adventure Hotel, city staff and the project consultants will speak with residents and solicit feedback.

“The urban design strategy is a key piece in the city’s overall vision to make Nelson a vibrant and livable community,” said Mayor Deb Kozak in the release.

“We’re building on our past successes to create a truly unique downtown for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Hundreds of residents and stakeholders participated in the design process. The city appreciates the feedback and is encouraging anyone with further thoughts to contact senior planner Megan Squires at atmsquires@nelson.ca or (250) 353-8221.
