Like the animals it takes in, the Kitimat Humane Society is still waiting to move into its new home.

Ongoing issues with the building and the site have prevented the occupancy of the newly renovated animal shelter.

Initially the facility’s water was not considered potable. More recently city building inspectors have identified other deficiencies.

“There were a couple of things that had to be done before occupancy, like a proper hand rail,” said Walter McLellan, municipal clerk.

As of press time, the city was still waiting for approval of the new shelter’s water by the Northern Health Authority.

At its January 17 meeting council agreed to an estimated budget of $10,000 to complete work on the shelter, including creating manuals for the building.

“I’m hoping by the end of this month we’ll be able to [move in],” said Mary Ann Baumbach of the KHS.

The shelter had its grand opening and invited Kitimatians to tour the new facility in November. On December 20, Yvonne Lee of the Looking for Love Animal Shelter Society presented mayor Monaghan with the key to the shelter.
