New charges have been laid against Kenneth Jacob Fenton, the man who plead guilty last week in the death of an RCMP officer.
These new charges relate to an incident that occurred on May 22, 2016 — just a few weeks after he crashed into Const. Sarah Beckett’s police cruiser in early April.
According to court records, Fenton is charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, causing an accident resulting in bodily harm, and flight causing bodily harm, after a single-vehicle crash on Goldstream Heights Road in the Malahat area.
At the time, Malahat Fire Chief Rob Patterson said both occupants — Fenton and a female passenger, Megan Ashe — were lucky to be alive and transported to hospital with substantial injuries. Neither person was wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact.
Ashe has since filed a civil suit alleging she was in the passenger seat when Fenton rolled the vehicle while running from a police road check.
The Independent Investigations Office of BC was initially deployed to the scene to determine if there was a connection between the injuries and the actions of police, but the Office determined that injuries suffered did not meet the established threshold of serious harm.
A sentencing date for Fenton’s guilty plea is expected to take place on June 6 in Victoria, while he’s scheduled to appear in a Duncan courtroom on June 27 for the Malahat crash.
He is not in custody at this time and remains out on bail.
