Daisy the Duck and her new brood have left the building.
Specifically, Daisy has left the garden centre at Vernon’s Walmart, where she made a home for herself and six eggs among the rows of plants.
“The eggs hatched Wednesday night or Thursday morning, I saw their little heads,” said Walmart garden centre employee David Jones, who first discovered Daisy’s nest near the end of May.
“Apparently she hopped down from the shelf, the ducklings followed and they were scooped up by a customer and taken to a field behind the store or over by (BX) the creek.
“Daisy accepted the ducklings back and everybody was doing fine.”
Since she first appeared in the store, Daisy became quite an attraction, though she wasn’t always fond of the attention.
“Lots of people came in with their kids but sometimes they got too close and she didn’t like that,” said Jones.
The duck was first observed flying over the garden centre fence and hanging around near the end of May.
Jones said the duck made a home for her and the eggs in the centre for close to a month.
If Daisy does decide to come back next year – Jones said a similar situation with a duck happened at a Kelowna business – Walmart will welcome her back.
“We gave her everything she needed,” said Jones, who grew quite fond of Daisy.
“I miss her, but I’m happy it all worked out. I couldn’t have hoped for more.”
