New garbage bins coming to Fort St. James

The purchase of a new garbage truck means garbage collection clients will be getting new garbage bins soon.

The purchase of a new garbage truck means garbage collection clients will be getting new garbage bins soon.

The cost of the new bins will be adapted into the garbage collection rates on a cost-recovery basis over five years.

There’s a ten year limited-warranty on each can, but due to weather conditions and other concerns, they estimate having to service or replace the cans within a five year period.

The bin costs are still estimates based on cost, delivery and assembly, but are expected to be about $50 for the large bin, $40 for the medium bin and $30 for the small bin.

In the property tax notices going out mid-May, there will be a form included in the notice which property owners can use to choose their desired size of can and submit it back to the district.

Property owners who don’t respond will receive the medium-sized can.

The large can is estimated to be approximately three traditional garbage cans in volume, the medium two, and the small can, one.

There will be a bylaw adoption process in order to change the rates, with a public hearing to pass the increased rates.

“There will be an opportunity for public to have their input on those when we get to that stage,” said Jeff Lovell, acting director of finance for Fort St. James.
