Expanded housing opportunities for seniors in Lumby are almost ready to be unveiled.
Planning is underway for a grand opening at Monashee Place and the renovated lounge and new kitchen at Saddle Mountain Place.
“The new Monashee Place was built and is owned and regulated by B.C. Housing,” said Judy Gibbs, with the Lumby Senior Citizens Housing Society.
“The project was made possible with financial support from the federal government, the government of B.C. and the Village of Lumby to provide affordable housing opportunities for seniors and handicapped persons with low to moderate income.”
Monashee Place is managed by the society through a contract with B.C. Housing and an official ceremony will be held Sept. 11.
The society has also been busy with changes at Saddle Mountain Place, which it also operates.
“The society has had plans for a number of years to expand the lounge and build a workable kitchen area to supply nourishing meals and programs for seniors in Lumby and Areas D and E,” said Gibbs.
“The new additions to the lounge building, which were funded by donations from the community and funding from the sale of land to B.C. Housing for Monashee Place, will further assist our residents to continue to live independently.”
The lounge and kitchen are used for a variety of programs.
“The lounge is also used by the residents to hold bingo, potlucks, song, dance and karaoke,” said Gibbs.
“Meals and programs, run by many volunteers within the community, are provided three times a week through a contract with the White Valley Community Resource Centre.”
