A new Intergenerational Walking Path will be constructed at the Fraserview Learning Centre on Seventh Avenue in Mission.
Lifetime Learning Centre Society made the official announcement and organized a ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday (Sept. 21).
Funded by the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, this year-long project engages youth and seniors in intergenerational mentoring, promoting connections and collaborative partnerships between these two communities of learners.
This project continues until March 2017. It enables seniors and students to share and learn new skills in the research, design, construction and implementation of the path. Once completed, the path will be available to students and the community at large for their wellness and fitness programs.
It features: a safe location away from traffic; a surface composition that is useable for walking, running, use with walkers and other assisted devices, providing measureable distances and goal setting for all users.
Led by an actively engaged population of seniors, this new initiative is built on the success of two previously funded New Horizons for Seniors projects: Linking Hands through the Generations and the Wellness program. It is also a seniors mentoring / knowledge exchange program where the walking path is the catalyst that provides links to the natural outside environment, encourages fitness activities, and learning in a non-classroom setting.
