Two moms are building a market to fill a void.

During six weeks at Christmas Mel Bengtson is busy selling photography and jewelry at all the Christmas craft fairs she can get into. This small business is her only job.

While waiting for spring to come and the market season to pick back up, she decided to host a market with her friend and fellow entrepreneur Tarra Rosenke.

Rosenke sells candles through a home party company and works two days a week selling insurance.

The women run their home businesses so they can stay home with their children and wanted a way to pick up business. So they decided to start The Market at Luxton.

The market is at the Luxton fairgrounds hall and about 30 vendors, mostly women and mothers will have small business on display selling items including crafts, food storage containers, jewelry and esthetics services.

The show is being marketed as an evening of shopping for women.

“My husband will be at my table for a bit. Men are welcome to come, we aren’t going to turn them away,” Bengtson said.

These two moms know how nice it can be to shop without their children touching everything on display and thought having a kids area at the market was essential.

“We will have older kids on the stage watching the kids and there will be colouring sheets for them,” said Rosenke. “They are on the stage so you can still see your kids while you are shopping.”

Admission is free. If this market is successful the women hope to make it a monthly event.

“Quite a few people are new at this market,” said Bengtson. “It’s not the same people you see at every market in Langford.”

The Market at Luxton is on Wednesday Feb. 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 1040 Marwood Ave.
