New name selected for Thrift Store

An Agassiz-Harrison Community Services fundraiser determined the thrift store's new name.

After nearly five months of searching for a new name, the Agassiz-Harrison Community Services’ thrift store finally has one.

In early May, Agassiz-Harrison Community Services decided to hold a competition and fundraiser over the summer, giving people the opportunity to submit, and vote on, what they thought the thrift store should be called.

Community members had until the end of May to submit a potential name, and then until Sept. 20 to vote for the name of their choice.

And now, almost five months since the start of the fundraiser, the store is officially called the Agassiz Thrift Store.

The store has been nameless for 39 years following its opening in 1977, and Sibley saw this an opportunity for community involvement.

“It doesn’t have a name, it was just called the thrift store,” she said.

While the fundraiser was successful in finding a name for the store, Jen Sibley, Agassiz-Harrison Community Services’ events coordinator had slightly higher hopes.

“It didn’t go over as well as we had hoped,” she said. “We only raised $80, but we did lighten some people of their pocket change.”

The runner up title was Community Closet, and the grand prize winner took home a $50 gift card to the Agassiz Thrift Store.
