New public art piece planned for Mission

The intended outcome of this project is to capture the history and pride of Mission over the last 125 years in a piece of original art work

Mission is going to get a new piece of public art.

A request for proposals (RFP) has been issued for a piece of art that will commemorate Mission’s 125th anniversary.

Stephanie Key, Mission’s deputy director of Parks, Recreation and Culture said the plan is to be able to put up a piece of public art in the corner of Welton St. and Second Ave. in the corner parking lot.

“We have a request for proposals out and we hope to have some artists come up with some great designs,” said Key.

Mission council had previously indicated its desire to invest in public art  and Mission’s 125th anniversary  was an opportunity to act on it.

Key said there are existing pieces of public art around the community – the eagle and sturgeon sculptures by the harbour and the house posts at Fraser River Heritage Park are examples – but this would be the first new piece in quite some time.

Key is hoping that funding for public art will be an annual occurrence, either to buy new pieces or to maintain existing ones.

The current request to artists states “The intended outcome of this project is to capture the history and pride of Mission over the last 125 years in a piece of original art work.”

Key said she is excited to see what designs come in.

According to the RFP, the budget available for this project is $40,000 including design, fabrication and installation plus GST.
