The Surrey School District has announced a potential site for a new elementary school in the south Newton area.
The proposed site is located close to the former school district offices near 142 Street and 59 Avenue.
Although the 10-acre parcel is not ideal due to some existing power lines and close proximity to the Surrey Pre-Trial Service Centre, Trustee Laurae McNally suggested the site could be swapped with the city for a more desirable location, if one becomes available.
Finding suitable land for a reasonable cost is becoming more difficult with the increased costs and demand for property in the area.
“In the Grandview/Sunnyside area alone, there are already 1,000 units in application,” said McNally. “Not to mention all the amassing that’s going on… it’s really scary.”
In May the education ministry announced funding for 600 new spaces through expansions at three elementary schools, along with the construction of a new secondary school in the Grandview area of South Surrey.
