Next project proposed as part of a series of buildings on Nanaimo’s Haliburton Street

Five-storey building near Finlayson Street will include 38 residential units

The city has received a permit application for the latest in a series of buildings changing the look of Haliburton Street.

Last week, the City of Nanaimo’s design advisory panel reviewed an application for a 38-unit residential building at 41-45 Haliburton St.

Parkshore Projects has constructed one five-storey building close by in the 100 block of Haliburton, and two more Parkshore buildings have recently been approved in the neighbourhood, as well. The ‘Lumina’ building at 41-45 Haliburton will continue “positive and sustainable change to this well-established neighbourhood” and “set a high standard for future developments,” the application says, adding that the proposal has been reviewed and supported by the South End Community Association.

The new building will include 21 one-bedroom units, 12 two-bedroom units and five studio units, all with patios, and an underground parkade.

The proposal complies with zoning with the exception of a height variance from 14 metres to 15.75 metres.

The design panel supported the height variance, but recommended that the applicant consider expanding design elements of the the front of the building to the other sides of the building, and consider adjusting the roof fascia’s dark colour and size to reduce its prominence.

Coun. Tyler Brown, a member of the design advisory panel, said the building represents the type of density the downtown needs.
