Night work on Millstream Road takes a toll

Langford resident says she’s ‘over the edge’ with nighttime noise

Night work on Millstream Road is costing a Langford woman sleep and shifts at work.

Tricia Law has lived in the 2300-block of Millstream Road near the intersection of Treanor Avenue for the past two years.

“There has been construction going on all the time in the area since I moved in,” said Law, who lives in a suite on the property that sits a couple of hundred metres from the road. “It seems like they finish blasting in one place and start blasting in another.”

Although she manages to deal with the noise during the day, the recent spate of night noise – work being done by BC Hydro to expand its infrastructure – made it impossible to sleep, she said, and cost her shifts at work. “It’s pushed me over the edge,” Law said. “It’s honking, beeping and banging all night long. I know some of the local businesses are frustrated as well.”

Law said she contacted the City of Langford about the situation but was told there was nothing they could do. She has also contacted BC Hydro, but said they couldn’t provide her with any information about when the work would be finished.

George Henshall, manager of public works for the City of Langford, said he contacted BC Hydro after meeting with Law.

BC Hydro has a community liaison dealing with complaints, he said, adding that the night work portion of the project was expected to be completed last Friday.

The City was told Hydro could only do the work at night because of the amount of daytime traffic along that stretch of Millstream Road, Henshall said. “It would take much much longer to do it during the day,” he added.

Maintaining access for emergency vehicles also played a role in the decision to do the work at night.
