Nine car pileup in Pitt Meadows

Police blame inattentive drivers for the collisions.

A nine vehicle crash on Lougheed Highway snarled traffic through Pitt Meadows on Thursday during the morning rush hour.

The pile-up happened just before 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Harris Road.

Police were called to the intersection after four cars travelling west crashed into each other.

While officers were en route, a second crash involving five vehicles took place in the east bound lanes.

No one was seriously injured, but the B.C. Ambulance Service took one driver to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It took approximately two hours before the road was completely opened, causing traffic to back up along Lougheed Hwy. and its feeder routes, although police were able to keep a lane open each way.

“At this point in time all I can say is a probable contributing factor in this crash was driver inattention,” said Sgt. Dale Somerville.

“Please remember to stay focused when driving, paying attention to your surroundings, and leaving enough distance between you and the vehicle in front of you is always a good plan.”

Punching glass

A 22-year-old man from Maple Ridge was arrested Thursday after he allegedly punched a window and a glass door at a Pitt Meadows bar.

Police were called to Roosters Cabaret in the 19000 block of the Lougheed Highway around 1:20 a.m. after staff reported the incident.

Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said the intoxicated man had been calmed down by the time police arrived.

He was taken to hospital, where he was treated for injuries to his hand.

He is scheduled to appear in court in May.
