The Nisga’a Fisheries and Wildlife Department (NFWD) reopened its Sockeye food fishery July 20, after initially closing it due to low returns to the Nass River watershed.
Since the closure on on July 12, above-average numbers of Sockeye have passed above Gitwinksihlkw and into spawning areas. The Sockeye fishery was originally scheduled to reopen on July 27 for a trial period.
The Chinook salmon fishery remains closed for the season, but Nass chum, Coho and pink salmon remain open. According to a NFWD media release, no fishing is allowed above Grease Harbour to reduce incidental catches of Chinook and still setting of nets is not allowed.
