Chilliwack RCMP have determined there was no “criminal involvement” in the Hazelwood Manor fire where one resident lost his life.
“Investigation into the cause of last Thursday’s fire in the 9200 block of Hazel Street, Chilliwack has ruled out any criminal involvement,” said Sgt. Krista Vrolyk, spokesperson for Chilliwack RCMP.

Fire broke out in the early hours of July 29 in a unit on the top floor of the four-storey apartment at 9282 Hazel Street.
One resident succumbed to his injuries after jumping off a fourth-floor balcony to escape the flames.
“Our thoughts continue to be with all of those affected by this fire. Many people lost their homes and one individual lost his life. It is such a tragedy,” said Vrolyk.
Fire crews arrived to find flames and black smoke venting from the roof at the rear of the structure.
Several people were trapped on balconies and fire crews quickly deployed ladders to rescue them.
“Our community is incredibly thankful and indebted to the members of the Chilliwack Fire Department whose quick action and bravery resulted in saving many lives and preventing further tragedy last week.”
Groups and individuals raised funds and collected goods for the fire victims.
“We’d also like to recognize the many generous members of our community who have shown support to the people displaced by this fire.”
RCMP has concluded its investigations now, which were underway with Chilliwack Fire Department and BC Coroners Service.
