The Yale Fire Department saved much of the Gold Nugget Motel after the building caught fire on Friday, April 2.

Fire chief Bruce Marshall said the fire started in a second-floor bedroom in the rear of the building. The blaze and firefighters’ response drew a number of spectators as the building itself sitting on a visible portion of Highway 1.

Two occupants were able to escape the fire safely and without injury. Marshall said including cleanup time, the fire department was on the scene for six hours and part of the building was able to be saved.

The cause of the fire is unclear, but Marshall said it was not suspicious.
