No plans to close schools in Mission

Motion intended to put closure rumours to rest

There are no school closures being planned in Mission in the next two to three years.

Mission Public School trustees approved the motion at the last board meeting in order put rumours to rest and alleviate concerns in the community.

“It’s important to the board to bring some level of comfort to parents, families, and staff at some of the rumour mill schools,” said trustee Tracy Loffler.

Trustee Randy Cairns noted while the intention locally is to not close any schools, the provincial minister of education can force the changes.

Trustee Jim Taylor suggested a stronger and clearer motion stating the board will not close any schools, but didn’t receive support from the majority.

Cairns agreed with Taylor’s intent, but didn’t want to vote for something he couldn’t guarantee.

“The wording means there’s no wriggle room, and I’m not comfortable with that,” said Cairns. “I know the board has the ability to change anything at anytime, but I don’t want to be put in a position of going back on my word.”

Board chair Rick McKamey noted the original motion already indicates there is a strong commitment to keep schools open.

“There’s no way any of us would consider closing a school,” said McKamey.
