Anticipation was high when John Christie and his staff at Parksville heavy Equipment fired up the cutting wheel and began to slice open their second mystery safe.
The floor safe was discovered when Christie’s crew demolished the 1930s-era Save-On-Gas station and adjoining restaurant last week. The team had been disappointed with their first find, a safe hidden in the old Thwaites Norris building in downtown Parksville. That one held nothing more than a single key.
This latest safe was found underneath the linoleum floor in the gas station, completely hidden and inaccessible. As it turned out, there’s a good reason it was so out of reach — it was completely empty.
“We cut it open with a cutting wheel, but there was nothing in it except a little bit of scale. It was a little anti-climatic.”
