The Regional District of Nanaimo will no longer pursue the plan to expand the San Pareil Community water system to include 41 properties.
A petition to add the properties in Electoral Area G (San Pareil, French Creek and Dashwood) to the regional district’s San Pareil Water Service Area failed to garner the 50 per cent required to get the project to proceed.
Out of the 41 petitions delivered to property owners, only 10 were returned, 11 properties short of achieving the 50 per cent threshold.
The expansion project was investigated in 2016 following the requests from property owners wanting to be included in the RDN’s water service area. The 41 properties are served by shallow private well.
An engineering design and construction cost estimate was completed in 2017. A capital cost charge bylaw establishing the cost for new properties to join the service area was approved last year and a public information session on the project was held in Parksville last April.
The total cost for a property owner to connect to the system was about $23,000 — $12,000 for watermain construction, about $7,400 for the Capital Cost Charge, and an estimated $3,600 for a new service line from the water meter into each house.
