Nobel prize-winning scientist giving talk

Central library hosts UVic’s Andrew Weaver for chat on climate

  • Oct. 13, 2011 12:00 p.m.

A lead author of a climate change panel that won a Nobel Peace Prize is speaking on global warming tomorrow (Oct. 15) at the downtown public library.

Andrew Weaver, a University of Victoria climate scientist, worked with Al Gore and a group of scientists on the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Weaver’s talk will focus on why global warming is such a controversial topic.

“It has always been our practise to promote and present programs that the public would be interested in, on topics of social value,” said Patricia Eaton, manager of public services for the Greater Victoria Public Library.

“Part of our mandate as a library is to inspire and engage our community on topics of interest on a local, national and global scale.

“Andrew Weaver is local, so we definitely want to promote programs developed by people in the community.”

The talk, called Generation Us: The Challenge of Global Warming, happens from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

The event is free to attend, but people are asked to register online ahead of time at www.gvpl.ca or by calling 250-413-0389.
