Nomination interest begins for Kelowna council

One mayoral and two council potential candidates pick up nomination forms

Three potential candidates for Kelowna council have already picked up their nomination packages at city hall.

City clerk Stephen Fleming said incumbent Luck Stack and new candidate Loyal Wooldridge have picked up their papers for council while Robert Schewe has done the same for mayor.

Wooldridge publicly announced his intent this spring to run for council.

“I can use my experience to fuse both a business mind with a social heart,” he said at his campaign announcement gathering in May hosted by Sandhill Wines.

Stack already announced he will seek re-election.

As for other incumbents, Mayor Colin Basran announced his bid for a second term early in the process.

Gail Given could not be reached for comment as she is away until July 16.

Coun. Ryan Donn says he will run for re-election, while Coun. Tracy Gray and Coun. Mohini Singh both told the Capital News they are not ready to disclose their intentions, although Gray already has a website up called votetracygray.com on which she is seeking donations for her re-election bid.

Singh, who said she is “leaning on running,” has an election sign for herself on her Facebook page.

Coun. Brad Sieben said he has not decided yet if he will seek a second term. He expects to make an announcement in August.

Coun. Charlie Hodge has said he’ll make his intentions known in September while Coun. Maxine DeHart said she is planning an announcement in the “near future.”

Fleming cautioned that requesting nomination papers does not often equate to who ends up running as a candidate in the fall civic election. But the city does ask whether or not those who pick up the forms want their names released publicly.

He said the city has established a 2018 civic election page on its website and will begin to post the names of confirmed candidates come September as stipulated by B.C. civic election legislation.

The deadline for submitting nomination papers is Sept. 14, 4 p.m.
