Candidate nomination packages are now available for the upcoming City of Castlegar byelection. The byelection is being held to fill the mayor’s position and one council position.
Nomination packages are available on the city’s website or at city hall. Completed forms must be turned in between 9 a.m. March 9 and 4 p.m. on March 19.
To qualify as a candidate you must be 18 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen, a resident of British Columbia for at least six months and not disqualified by any statute or law. Nominees must be nominated by two resident electors of the City of Castlegar. Nominees (candidates) are not required to be a resident or non-resident property owner in the City of Castlegar.
General voting day will be held on Saturday, April 24 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Castlegar & District Community Complex (located at 2101 6th Avenue). Advance voting will take place on Wednesday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 21 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Castlegar & District Community Complex.
The city has requested permission to allow mail-in ballots for the election, but has not been given an answer from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs.
As of publication time, two candidates — Gord Lamont and Florio Vassilakakis — had publicly announced plans to run for mayor, and no one had announced plans to run for council.
