Nomination packages for candidates in the 2014 municipal and local school board elections will be available as of August 29 at all local municipal and school district offices.
The Town of Sidney is getting an early start, offering packages Friday, August 22.
The nomination deadline is October 10, 2014. Local elections take place Saturday, November 15.
The Town of Sidney recently posted links to local elections information and details on voting days at its website (www.sidney.ca).
Changes to note in this election is the longer terms of office (four years instead of three), change in the next election date (third Saturday in October every four years — the next one will be 2018) and new accountability in campaign financing transparency.
Check with local rules on the required number of electors required to nominate a candidate. Candidates may also be required to pay a deposit of up to $100.
The Peninsula News Review has been informally polling current council members on their re-election plans this fall. Many are opting to wait until the end of summer before making their plans known.
