Nomination period kicks off in Terrace

Packages for city council, the regional district board and the school board available until Sept. 14

  • Sep. 5, 2018 12:00 a.m.

The nomination period for the municipal election officially opened Tuesday morning at 9 a.m., and already 13 packages have been given out for potential mayoral and city council candidates.

Nominations are also being accepted for prospective school board trustees and directors on the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine board.

Eight packages have been picked up by regional district hopefuls, with “several” out to potential school board trustees.

All packages are to be returned by Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.

An informational session on Sept. 4 for those interested in all three local government options drew six people to the regional district’s boardroom to find out more about candidate eligibility and commitments if elected.

City councillor Michael Prevost and school board trustee Roger Leclerc, who both announced they will not be running for re-election, spoke about their experiences and answered questions about the positions.

Alisa Thompson, the city’s corporate administrator, said while it was a small turnout it’s still early in the nomination process, and packages will be available over the next two weeks for potential candidates to fill out.

To be eligible for nomination for all three races, a candidate must be a Canadian citizen, 18-years old and a resident of British Columbia for at least six months. They also need a minimum of two signatures from residents in the area they want to run in, but they don’t need to live in the area to put their name in for the position.

Anyone who couldn’t make it and would like more information on the nomination process can still reach out to the chief elections officer (250-635-1907).
