New organizer excited to help graduates with formal wear

In the basement of Julie Manojlovic’s home are dozens of prom dresses for graduates who might not otherwise be able to afford a dress for their special day.

The Vanderhoof homemaker has recently taken the lead of the Cinderella Dreams Program that assists graduating students in the area with dresses or sponsored tux rentals.

“I’ve had people and students that I know, and family and friends that have graduated, and I know how expensive it was to get a dress for their graduation,” Manojlovic said, noting her daughter had graduated last year.

“It can get pretty ridiculous, and it would be really sad to see somebody not be able to go to something like that because they feel they don’t have appropriate formal wear.”

The Cinderella Program was launched more than six years ago by Kia Bruvold and Carolyn Leigh, who announced on Facebook in May 2019 they would be stepping back to prioritize their families, work and other volunteer efforts.

Dresses can be donated at Suds N Duds Drycleaning & Laundry Services & Boutique in Vanderhoof where they are cleaned.

Manojlovic estimates there are more than 100 dresses within the program’s inventory that are currently being stored in her basement for the time being.

Students interested in taking advantage of the Cinderella Dreams Program can contact Manojlovic on Facebook. Vanderhoof’s Department Store also work closely with the Program and provide fitted tuxes.

“I just think it’s a really great cause,” she said.
