North Cowichan is selling almost 26 acres of its land to a development company for $3 million.
Council decided at its meeting on May 3 to accept an offer from Turner Lane Development Corporation to buy the land, which is located in the Cowichan Lake, Skinner and Cassino roads area.
Scott Mack, North Cowichan’s director of development services, told council that the company has also recently acquired two adjacent properties, totalling almost nine acres.
Mack said that while the company’s exact plans for the properties are still in their early stages, it’s expected the land will be developed as a large residential neighbourhood.
“The developers have indicated they are interested in catering to the entry-level and affordable-housing markets,” he said.
“That makes sense for the area and will satisfy some of the demand for those types of housing there. There will, of course, be full public consultations on this during the process.”
Coun. Rob Douglas said he would like to see the $3 million North Cowichan sold the land for used for affordable housing or some other equally important initiatives.
“I would like to see how that money is planned to be allocated at a future meeting,” he said.
