The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• April 20, 11:28 p.m., 11000-block 72nd Ave.: Complainant reported a noise complaint in a nearby residence. On arrival, police noted loud talking and TV noise coming from the upper suite of the residence. Police spoke to the owner, who confirmed everyone who was inside lived at the address. Everyone in the residence was advised of the noise complaint and they were very apologetic. They agreed to turn the TV down and to lower their voices. The owner was advised regarding potential bylaw fines.
• April 21, 7:07 p.m., 10000-block 80th Ave.: Complainant called police to report a male and two females drinking in the field of a nearby park. Police attended and found the group drinking hard seltzer alcoholic drinks in the field. All parties were apologetic and co-operative. The group cleaned up and moved along out of the area.
• April 22, 3:10 p.m., location withheld: Complainant reported being scammed through the internet and phone. The complainant received an error message on her computer stating it was locked and to call the provided phone number for assistance. The complainant decided to call and was then transferred to a total of four different people. The subjects verified her identity through her last three bank transactions, which were correct but unauthorized. The subjects convinced the complainant to have money sent to them for the unauthorized transactions to be reversed. The subjects remained on the phone with her for several hours while she drove to a nearby store. The complainant spent $5,500 on various gift cards, which were all scratched and provided to the person on the phone. The complainant later learned that she had likely been scammed and cancelled all her credit cards. All banks were notified and police spoke to the complainant about preventing any future frauds.
• April 23, 12:39 a.m., 10000-block Nordel Way: Police were conducting proactive patrols when they observed a vehicle travelling at approximately 130 km/h in a posted 70 km/h zone. The vehicle struck two cones as it was turning to the right to get onto the overpass. Police also noted that the vehicle drifted between lanes and nearly struck a vehicle. A traffic stop was conducted and an odour of liquor was detected coming from the driver. An approved screening device demand was read and the driver provided two samples, both resulting in a “fail.” The driver was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and their vehicle was towed.
• April 23, 12:50 p.m., Highway 91 and Nordel Way: Police were conducting mobile radar speed enforcement when they found a vehicle going 95 km/h in a posted 50 km/h construction zone. A traffic stop was initiated, the driver was issued an excessive speeding ticket and their vehicle was towed.
• April 24, 1:43 p.m., 11000-block Pinewood Dr.: Complainant called police after observing several youths dressed in camouflage clothing hanging around near the entrance of a nearby school. The group’s leader stated that he was there with a small group from his church who were going to play hide and seek in the park. Police found that all youths had maps to the park trails.
