The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Aug. 4, 9:53 a.m., 6400-block 120th St.: Delta police received a call advising of a theft that occurred at a business. The suspect exited the store with groceries he did not pay for and was subsequently apprehended. The groceries were returned.
• Aug. 4, 12:39 p.m., 7100-block 120th St.: While conducting enforcement, a traffic stop was made and an odour of liquor was detected on the driver’s breath. An approved screening device demand was read and administered. First and second tests resulted in a “warn.” Driver was prohibited from driving and issued an immediate roadside prohibition. Driver left in a cab.
• Aug. 5, 11:48 a.m., 11900-block 88th Ave.: Complainant reported her grey Trek mountain bike stolen from the bike rack outside of a business. The bike was secured by a cord lock which was cut. Bike valued at $400.
• Aug. 5, 2:20 p.m., 7800-block 112th St.: Complainant reported two cellphones and $140 cash stolen from his gym locker.
• Aug. 5, 10:43 p.m., 8400-block 117B St.: Complainant called to report he heard a noise outside about an hour ago. He went out to check his truck and discovered two of the tires had been slashed. Approximate damage was $800.
• Aug. 6, 3:38 p.m., 4900-block 112th St.: Delta police received a report of a stolen truck. Vehicle was locked, had 225,000 kilometres, am unknown amount of gas and was alarmed. Nothing of value was inside the vehicle. It was parked in an area of the property that is not frequently visited. Vehicle has since been recovered.
• Aug. 6, 10:24 p.m., 11800-block 73rd Ave.: Complainant reported the theft of his electric bike from his backyard. The theft occurred between Aug. 2-6 and was noticed when he went to use it. Bike was a Sport 500 black OHM bike valued at approximately $5,000.
• Aug. 7, 9:25 a.m., 11700-block Nordel Way: A vehicle was observed leaving a liquor store parking lot at a high rate of speed. A DPD officer conducted a traffic stop and the driver admitted to drinking hard liquor the night before. An approved screening device demand was read and understood. First and second tests returned with “fail.” Driver issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and 30-day vehicle impoundment. Driver left the scene in a taxi.
• Aug. 7, 9:49 a.m., 8400-block Nordel Way: A Delta police officer was conducting laser speed enforcement targeting vehicles eastbound on Nordel Way, which is a 60km/h zone. A Nissan was observed driving at a high speed confirmed to be 109 km/hr. Driver was stopped and charged with excessive speed under the Motor Vehicle Act and a seven-day impound notice. Vehicle was towed and the driver left the scene with a friend.
• Aug. 8, 2:02 p.m., 5900-block Briarwood Cres.: Complainant reported unknown person(s) had entered his unlocked yard and stolen a five-gallon jerry can and a two-gallon jerry can. Approximate value was $100.
• Aug. 9, 5:31 p.m., 8900-block Watson Dr.: Complainant reported that her vehicle had been damaged sometime between Aug 2-6. She had it towed to an autobody shop and when the mechanic opened the engine, it was discovered that sugar was poured into the engine.
• Aug. 10, 7:42 p.m., 11700-block 72nd Ave.: A traffic stop was conducted and the driver admitted to consuming liquor. First and second approved screening device results read “fail.” Driver was served and explained a notice of driving prohibition and a vehicle impoundment notice. The driver and friends left the scene in a taxi and the vehicle was towed.
