The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Feb. 22, 8:02 p.m., 11900-block 72nd Ave.: Police conducted a traffic stop and spoke with the driver of the vehicle where a distinct odour of liquor was emanating from inside the vehicle. Police asked the driver when he had his last drink and his response was “20 years ago.” The driver provided a breath sample which determined his last drink was rather more recent. He was issued a three-day driving prohibition, his vehicle was seized and he was given a violation ticket.
• Feb. 23, 7:25 p.m., 11700-block 93rd Ave.: A caller reported that he had approximately $4,000 in power tools stolen from inside his vehicle sometime overnight. The unknown suspected manipulated the tailgate lock to gain access to the truck bed. Neighbours were made aware of the theft and all encouraged to report any suspicious individuals loitering in the area.
• Feb. 24, 9:17 a.m., 8400-block 112th St.: Police responded to a report of graffiti in the men’s and women’s washrooms in the concession area. The graffiti appeared to have been done over the weekend by unknown suspect(s). Prior to police arrival, the graffiti had been painted over by city staff.
• Feb. 24, 9:46 a.m., 6300-block 120th St.: An elderly driver had pulled into the 7-Eleven parking lot and while attempting to park the vehicle his foot hit the gas instead of the brake. The vehicle rolled over a postal box and went through one of the store’s windows. Thankfully, there were no injuries.
• Feb. 24, 9:46 p.m., 6800-block Westview Dr.: Police were contacted regarding a suspicious circumstance. A complainant advised that while he was driving in the area another vehicle was behind him flashing red and blue lights at him. One of the occupants of the vehicle had a megaphone and was amplifying police sirens, telling the driver to pull his vehicle over. The complainant did not pull over and instead contacted police to advise of the incident. Police attended to search the area but did not locate the vehicle in question. No other similar calls were received.
• Feb. 27, 3:19 p.m., 8800-block Delwood Dr.: A complainant advised that he had revealed his social insurance number to an unknown caller. The complainant advised that he had received a call from an unknown male who stated that he could be arrested if he refused to provide his personal information. The male later realized that this was in fact a fraudulent call.
• Feb. 28, 10:01 a.m., 8600-block 120th St.: A woman reported that she had downloaded an app, clicked on the link and unknowingly downloaded a virus. Fraudsters gained access to her computer and her financials, successfully withdrawing money. The woman contacted her bank to have her accounts closed.
• Feb. 28, 9:16 p.m., 70th Avenue and 120th Street: Police were conducting traffic enforcement in the area, specifically targeting impaired drivers. A vehicle was observed driving through the parking lot at extremely slow speeds. The driver exited from the vehicle and took a misstep, almost falling over. The male ran a few errands and got back into his vehicle. The vehicle was pulled over and the driver provided a breath sample, resulting in a “fail.” A 90-day notice of prohibition was served, his vehicle impounded and he was served a violation ticket.
