The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Jan. 20, 12:40 p.m., 11600-block Ridgecrest Dr.: Complainant reported the theft of a package from his residence. He had been notified of a delivery, but when he checked it was gone. The package was believed to contain a dog bed, valued at $40.
• Jan. 23, 1:20 a.m., 7000-block 120th St.: Police were conducting patrols and noted an idling vehicle along the west side of the street. After querying the licence plate, police noted the registered owner had a notification requiring that a driving prohibition be served. The constable stopped parallel to the vehicle, noting a male driver and passenger, then parked and approached the driver’s side of the vehicle. At this point the driver was noted to now be in the rear passenger seat. The officer noted the driver had a distinct odour of liquor emanating from his mouth and told him he was required to blow into the approved screening device. The driver refused to provide a sample despite multiple requests and was given a 90-day driving prohibition, with a mandatory 30-day impound of his vehicle. Police also advised the driver, who was the registered owner, that he would be receiving a notice of driving prohibition for a period of nine months, separate and in addition to the 90-day driving prohibition.
• Jan. 23, 3:53 a.m., Alex Fraser Bridge: Police received a call reporting a man walking in the southbound slow lane of the bridge. Upon attendance police located the man who explained he was walking in the slow lane because he did not like walking on the pedestrian walkway as he was afraid of heights and it was too close to the edge. Police transported him to a safer location within North Delta.
• Jan. 24, 9:34 p.m., 8100-block 120th St.: A loss prevention officer contacted police to report someone was attempting to steal merchandise from the store. The man placed items into a cart and exited the store without paying. Police located the man with cart and merchandise and arrested him. $285 worth of merchandise was recovered and returned to the store.
• Jan. 25, 10:53 a.m., 11800-block 88th Ave.: Complaint received that maintenance closets and lockers had been broken into overnight. Police investigation revealed locked maintenance rooms on two separate floors had been pried open. At the time of police attendance it was unclear if any items had been stolen. Complainant was advised to canvass locker owners and check if items had been stolen.
• Jan. 25, 8:19 p.m., 8100-block 120th St.: Police were called to a report of five youths believed to be drinking in an underground parking lot at this location. Police attended and spoke to one of the group, who advised the five had met up in this location to make plans. Nothing suspicious and no alcohol was present or believed to have been consumed. Parties were sent on their way.
• Jan. 25, 10:00 p.m., 8100-block 120th St.: Police responded to a call of a theft in progress. Two females were observed to have selected and concealed items, then allegedly left the store without payment. Police patrols of the area were negative. Stolen merchandise estimated to be valued at $500.
• Jan. 26, 7:13 p.m., 70th Avenue and Nicholson Road: Police responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck in a crosswalk at this location. The driver was travelling northbound on Nicholson Road when he struck one of three individuals who were walking eastbound in the crosswalk on 70th Avenue. At the time of the collision it was raining lightly. All pedestrians were wearing dark clothing. The pedestrian who was struck was taken to hospital and released shortly thereafter with minor injuries. The driver was given a ticket for failing to yield to pedestrians.
• Jan. 27, 3:29 a.m., 120th Street and 72nd Avenue: Police were advised to be on the lookout for a possible impaired driver traveling southbound on Highway 91 over the Alex Fraser Bridge and into Delta. Police were able to locate the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop shortly thereafter. A distinct odour of liquor was noted to be coming from the vehicle, and an approved screening device demand was made. The driver blew a “fail” twice, resulting in a 90-day driving suspension and having his vehicle impounded for 30 days.
