The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Jan. 23, 5:02 p.m., 7000-block 112th St.: Complainant called police to report that an LED rope garden light had been stolen off of a plant located in her front yard. The incident was captured on video where it can be seen that a male arrived in a vehicle and took the light. Police reviewed the video and, due to its extremely poor quality, were unable to decipher an associated licence plate or identify the subject. Police advised the female to remember to keep all doors locked and to have valuables out of view.
• Jan. 23, 11:40 p.m., Nordel Way and 120th Street: Police were conducting routine patrols when they observed a vehicle going 113 km/h in a posted 60 km/h. Police stopped the vehicle, the driver was issued an excessive speeding ticket and the vehicle was towed.
• Jan. 26, 8:49 a.m., Nordel Way and Highway 17: Police observed a single motor vehicle incident westbound from Highway 17 onto Nordel Way. The driver stated that he was making a left turn westbound when a water leak occurred from his roof top, causing him to swerve and hit the sign on the meridian. Damage to the vehicle was sustained but no injuries or signs of impairment were present.
• Jan. 26, 9:42 a.m., 12100-block 66th Ave.: Police conducted a traffic stop to test for sobriety. The driver had an odour of liquor on his breath as he spoke. The driver stated his last drink was at “7 p.m. last night.” An approved screen device demand was read, resulting in two “fails.” The male was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was towed.
• Jan. 26, 12:00 p.m., Kittson Parkway and McKenzie Drive: Police were conducting mobile speed enforcement when a vehicle drove by at a speed of 105 km/h in a posted 50 km/h. Police stopped the vehicle, the driver was issued an excessive speeding ticket and the vehicle was towed.
• Jan. 28, 8:09 p.m., 8300-block Highway 17: Complainant reported that he was involved in a road rage incident. He advised that a vehicle attempted to pass him, but he would not allow the truck to do so as the vehicle had been tail-gating him for some time. The other driver then drove in the shoulder lane and threw a measuring tape at the semi-truck, causing a minor scratch. The other vehicle has been the subject of complaint in other road rage incidents. Police attended the other vehicle’s residence and issued violation tickets for driving without consideration, passing unsafely on the right, and throwing an item that may cause harm.
• Jan. 30, 3:05 p.m., 11000-block 87th Ave.: Police observed a male attempting to gain entry into a vehicle. Police learned that the male’s dog was upset about the amount of treats he was receiving and therefore locked his owner out of his own vehicle. The prank went sideways as the dog learned the hard way that opposable thumbs and general knowledge of human technology was key in opening a vehicle from the inside. Police utilized the door opening kit from their vehicle. As police had a hard time opening the door, the dog continued to stare and police believed the dog was laughing at them. Once the vehicle was unlocked police verified that the male was the registered owner of the vehicle.
