The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Nov. 11, 12:00 a.m., 7400-block 120th St.: Police noticed a male staggering while trying to get to his vehicle. A traffic stop was conducted and a distinct odour of alcohol was noted. A breath sample was obtained and the driver registered a fail. A notice of driving prohibition was issued, along with a violation ticket, and a vehicle impoundment of 30 days.
• Nov. 12, 8:13 p.m., 80th Avenue and 114th Street: Ongoing complaints of fireworks in the area. Police attended the area and conducted extensive foot patrols but were unable to locate the source of the noise. Officers noted that the fireworks taking place in the North Delta/Surrey area were a result of ongoing celebrations of the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak and happened to coincide with a full moon of the lunar month Katak.
• Nov. 13, 8:11 a.m., 900-block Alex Fraser Bridge: A vehicle was seen driving at a high rate of speed. Police were conducting radar enforcement and noted the vehicle travelling at 137 km/h. The vehicle was stopped and driver served a violation ticket for excessive speed. His vehicle was impounded and the driver departed the bridge in a taxi.
• Nov. 13, 7:14 p.m., 11400-block 92nd Ave.: A resident in the neighbourhood contacted police to report that a truck had hit wires in front of her residence. Police attended and noted that the Delta Fire Department was already assessing the scene. The driver of the semi-truck, who was unfamiliar with the area, had taken a wrong turn. Police escorted the driver out of the neighbourhood to a designated truck route, re-routing him back to his intended destination. The driver was given a warning ticket.
• Nov. 14, 4:24 p.m., 11900-block 88th Ave.: Reports of a vehicle hitting a curb and crossing the centre line multiple times was brought to the attention of police. Police located the vehicle and conducted a vehicle stop. Police spoke with the driver, who was having difficulty following directions. The driver refused to provide a breath sample. As a result, a 90-day driving prohibition, violation ticket, and 30-day vehicle impoundment were issued. The driver left the scene on foot.
• Nov. 15, 11:16 a.m., 88th Avenue and 120th Street: Callers notified police about an aggressive panhandler yelling at the drivers stopped for a red light along Nordel Way. Police located the male who advised he was not yelling but rather speaking loudly due to the noise from the traffic. Police requested that the male leave the area.
• Nov. 16, 12:06 p.m., 6400-block Sunwood Dr.: Residents in the neighbourhood reported a theft of three Christmas projectors from their lawn — despite the projectors being tied down by cables. There were no witnesses or suspects. It is believed that the theft occurred sometime in the early morning hours.
• Nov. 17, 3:42 a.m., 10900-block Nordel Way: A complainant reported an intoxicated male stumbling in the middle of the road. Police located the male, who had a large bump on his head. It appeared that he had fallen, given his intoxicated condition. Paramedics attended and transported the male to the hospital for treatment.
