The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Nov. 10, 10:38 a.m., 8400-block Nordel Way: Police responded to a collision involving two vehicles and spoke with each driver. Police were informed that one driver had suddenly hit their brakes hard as the light changed from green to yellow, resulting in the vehicle being rear-ended. Extensive damage was done to the rear end of the vehicle and minimal damage to the front end of the other vehicle. No serious injuries.
• Nov. 10, 6:11 p.m., 11900-block 72nd Ave.: Complainant contacted police after observing a vehicle having what appeared to be police lights on it and was using the lights to pass vehicles in traffic. Police located the vehicle and observed a light bar on top of the vehicle’s cab. The male demonstrated the light patterns, which he said were white and amber only, though he also indicated that the light bar could display any colour. The male claimed to only use the light bar for emergencies, therefore, police strongly warned him regarding the illegal nature of the use of the light bar. Police directed him to remove the light bar and was cautioned against using it again. The male was given several written warnings.
• Nov. 11, 12:03 p.m., 10100-block River Rd.: An employee from a nearby establishment advised that a purse had been left behind from the night before. Police picked up the purse and located the owner’s identification. Police called the owner and she was successfully able to describe the purse and its contents. Police returned the purse to the owner.
• Nov. 11, 1:21 p.m., 7000-block 120th St.: A manager of a nearby establishment called police to report that a male came into the restaurant and posed as an employee. Police attended, determined nothing was stolen and no injuries were obtained. The male went behind the counter and stated that he “was training” while he and his friends filmed the interactions. Police were able to determine who the male was through video footage. Police contacted the male, who denied all allegations and could not come up with a reasonable explanation of as to why there was video footage of him doing so. Police warned the male to cease pranks or charges may be considered.
• Nov. 11, 7:32 p.m., 10800-block 80th Ave.: Complainant contacted police after observing three males climb onto the roof of a nearby elementary school. Police arrived and advised the three males to climb down from the roof. The three males did so without issue, and advised the police that they had climbed onto the roof to talk.
• Nov. 12, 8:20 p.m., 7000-block 120th St.: Complainant reported that two males were refusing to leave a restaurant after being cut off from drinking too much alcohol. Police attended and confirmed that the males had settled the tab and that they were being argumentative about being cut off. Police spoke with the males, who were respectful and advised that their friend was on his way to pick them up. Police stood by until their friend arrived to provide them with a ride home.
• Nov. 14, 2:59 p.m., 8400-block Brooke Rd.: Complainant reported a possible impaired driver who was observed nearly side-swiping a curb and unable to maintain their lane position. Police intercepted the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was detained for an impaired driving investigation and was read the mandatory approved screening device demand. Police determined that the driver had no driving impairment, however he had an invalid driver’s licence. Subsequently, the driver was given a ticket and released from the scene.
• Nov. 15, 12:29 a.m., 11600-block 96th Ave.: While conducting area patrols, police observed a vehicle in the parking lot of a closed gas station. Upon police arrival, the vehicle quickly left the parking lot. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver verbally identified himself as being 43 years old, even though he appeared to be underage. The driver advised he did not have his driver’s licence with him. The male then identified himself and admitted to taking his parents vehicle for a joyride while they were away. The driver’s mother was advised of the incident and attended the scene, and the driver was issued a ticket for not having a driver’s licence.
