The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Oct. 6, 12:25 p.m., 10900-block 72nd Ave.: Delta police were traveling west in the second lane in an unmarked police vehicle when they observed the vehicle behind them accelerate and quickly gain speed. The vehicle passed the marked 60 km/h speed sign, with the front radar of the police car locking the speed in at 160 km/h. The vehicle was impounded for seven days and the driver was served with a ticket for excessive speeding.
• Oct. 7, 11:52 p.m., 7200-block 120th St.: Police were requested to assist another police agency with a traffic stop. Upon arrival, one male was in custody, and a request was made for a detection dog. Police Service Dog Remi who is trained in drugs and firearms, was deployed on the vehicle. After searching both outside and inside the vehicle, PSD Remi “indicated” toward the center console, where DPD officers located a large quantity of cash.
• Oct. 11, 2:00 p.m., Highway 10 and 120th Street: Complainant reported observing a vehicle swerving along Highway 17A and Ladner Trunk Road. A traffic stop was initiated at Highway 10 and 120th Street by Delta police. Two meth pipes were observed in plain view in the center console. A standard field sobriety test demand was read, and the driver performed poorly. The vehicle was impounded.
• Oct. 11, 6:00 p.m., 11500-block 87A Ave.: Complainant reported that his vehicle had been taken. The complainant advised he had attended a party on Oct. 9 and left his keys while he was drinking. He last saw his vehicle at 8 a.m. on Oct. 10. The complainant advised when he returned at 6 p.m. that day, the vehicle and keys were missing.
• Oct. 12, 7900-block 120th St.: While conducting proactive patrols, Delta police observed a vehicle parked in the parking lot of a local restaurant establishment. A query of the licence plate revealed that the driver was prohibited from driving due to a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition (IRP) in August. Shortly after, the vehicle was seen leaving the parking lot, heading southbound on 120th Street. Police followed the vehicle and observed indicia of impairment. A vehicle stop was conducted, the driver was identified, and police noted an odour of liquor emanating from the mouth of the driver. Two alcohol screening device tests resulted in fails. Another 90-day IRP was issued and the vehicle was impounded.
• Oct. 12, 5:56 p.m., 7400-block Barrymore Dr.: Complainant reported that between Oct. 9 and 12, his vehicle was broken into and two pairs of sunglasses plus $4 in change were stolen. Police spoke with the complainant, who advised that the vehicle was parked in front of his residence. There was no damage to his vehicle and the point of entry was unknown.
