Remembrance Day will be observed in a combination of small groups and virtual ceremonies on the North Island this year.
The Port Hardy Legion #237 is hosting an invitation-only ceremony, which will be radio broadcast by 1240 Coast AM, and live streamed to their Facebook page. Ian Hill, the Legion’s vice president hopes the live stream and radio broadcast will help people feel like they’re still participating even while staying away from the cenotaph. The ceremony at Carrot Park typically draws a crowd of a few hundred people.
The Port Alice Legion #180 is also hosting a private ceremony; a small group of their executive members will gather at 11 a.m. to lay a wreath in commemoration of those who sacrificed for Canada’s safety and peace.
Port McNeill’s Legion #281 invites people to bring a poppy to the cenotaph (McNeill Rd and Campbell Way), with a mask and gloves and respecting social distancing, however it will not be hosting a ceremony.
Alert Bay will host a private ceremony, which will be live streamed on the Alert Bay Legion #198’s Facebook page.
