North Surrey Learning Centre forced to move again

Lease on current building expires at end of June.

For the second time in seven years, students and staff at the North Surrey Learning centre will have to pack up and move to a new location this fall.

The program caters to 15- to 19-year-olds in Grades 10 to 12 hoping to complete high school outside the mainstream secondary school system. There are about 240 teens in the program.

It has been located near 77 Avenue and 134 Street since 2008, when it had to be moved from its previous home at 92 Avenue and 140 Street during construction of the District Education Centre. Parents at that time weren’t pleased students were being uprooted to Newton from North Surrey.

According to the school district, the lease at the current location expires at the end of June and the learning centre is being forced to vacate by the building’s owners.

At a public meeting Thursday evening Surrey school trustees were expected to direct district staff to begin scouting possible new locations for the program.
