SURREY — The Now is up for three provincial journalism awards.
Between the two of them, reporter Amy Reid and editor Beau Simpson have been nominated for three 2017 Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards.
- Reid’s “Narcan on Heaven’s Door” series is nominated for Best Feature Series. In her three-part series, Reid delves into the difference the drug Narcan is making in Surrey’s streets, how it works, why drug overdose deaths will likely continue to increase (and they did in the months that followed) and how government could better help the drug addicted. It’s noteworthy that 10 days after Reid’s series concluded, on April 14, the province declared the situation a public health emergency.
- Simpson is up for Best Sports Feature, for his article headlined “Surrey sisters in sync.” His story, written from a first-person perspective, featured Surrey twins Julie and Christina Sevsek, Cloverdale athletes who are destined for greatness in the world of track and field.
- Finally, Reid and Simpson are both nominated in the Online Innovation category for their online telling of Brent Burgher’s story. “Being Brent” used words, photos and video to share the emotional story of a Cloverdale man with Tourette’s syndrome who faces every day challenges in his community. The winners will be announced April 29th during the Ma Murray Awards Gala on at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond.
