Oak Bay’s police force was busy last year.
Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties said the department had a total of 4,812 files throughout 2018, up from 4,400 in 2017 and an increase of approximately 10 per cent.
“The stats certainly reveal that we were much busier this year than last, however, it’s important to remember that Oak Bay is one of the safest communities in Canada,” Bernoties said.

Of note, police reported that there were 27 assault files this year, up from 18 in 2017. They also reported a 25 per cent increase in mental health calls, and a 33 per cent increase in missing persons cases, with 77 and 24 files each respectively. There was roughly the same number of files regarding theft from vehicles.
Thefts of motor vehicles — including golf carts and electric bicycles — increased three times, reaching 12 this year.
“Ironically, this community’s wonderful and well a deserved reputation seems to work against us at times as some people feel so safe they leave their vehicles unlocked,” Bernoties said.
Police did report a decrease in number of motor vehicle collisions with 121, down from 143.
