A POLICE officer suffered a broken leg while trying to arrest a person at a Hazelton area New Year’s dance, report New Hazelton RCMP.

Other officers later arrested a person hiding in a bathroom at the dance location and are recommending charges of causing a disturbance, resisting arrest and assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm.

“The male is not well known to police and his name is not being released pending charge approval from Crown Counsel,” police added.

Police say four officers were on a patrol of dance locations when they came across two males attempting to fight one another at one of the locations.

“The police were present and observed this so they intervened separating the two males.  While the males were separated, one male attempted to assault the other male and a police officer attempted to arrest him. The male suspect resisted the arresting officer and other assisting officers resulting in an altercation.  When the officer attempted to handcuff the suspect, he began pulling away and the officer attempted to force the male to the ground resulting in the officer and suspect both falling to the ground,” a police report indicated.

The officer was taken to hospital by ambulance.

“The RCMP would like to thank all the members of the public who attended to the injured member at the scene offering assistance.  Should any member of the public have witnessed this incident, they are asked to contact Cst. G. STEWART or Sgt. J. PELLEY of the New Hazelton Detachment,” a police statement concluded.
