Police and fire crews continue to investigate a weekend fire at an Enderby motel that sent a woman to hospital.
Both RCMP and the Enderby fire department received reports of the fire in a ground-level unit at the Sleep Right Inn, in the 600 block of King Avenue, shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday.
“We had 12 members there and there was heavy black smoke coming out of the building, plus flames,” said Enderby fire chief Kevin Alstad Monday. “We hit it hard and were able to contain the fire to the one unit.”
The occupant of the unit, a 57-year-old woman, had been taken to hospital before emergency crews arrived.
“Our officers are following up with interviews of witnesses in and around the area today in hopes of piecing together what happened,” said Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk Monday.
“There is a report of some kind of a disturbance prior to the fire in and around the area, and we’re following up on that report.”
The woman’s dog died in the fire.
It’s believed the fire started in the living room area of the unit.
Some of the neighbouring suites received some smoke damage as a result of the fire.
The building had been evacuated with tenants in the parking lot upon the arrival of the fire crews.
One woman is believed to have suffered some burns to her hand, and other tenants are believed to have helped the owner or manager try to put out the blaze with fire extinguishers.
The cause of the fire has not been released.
